Weathering the Storm
“DOs & DON’Ts”
Experiencing the impact of a severe weather event or related catastrophe can be devastating. During the aftermath, most victims are left emotionally and physically drained and are not thinking about safety issues or accidentally causing further damage to property. That’s why we developed some simple “do’s and don’ts” following a storm that can help with safety as well as expedite your claims process.
— DO be cautious when re-entering premises. Days may pass before the area is deemed safe by emergency management officials. If appropriate, secure property or set aside impacted materials to avoid further damage.
— DO exit the premises immediately if you smell a “rotten egg” aroma, which could indicate a natural or propane gas leak. Report the issue to your local fire department.
— DO take photographs or video of damaged property, including spoiled food and perishable items, before discarding.
— DON’T go near electricity, especially if flooding has occurred; let local professionals make sure the lines are safe first.
— DON’T ingest water, food products, or medicine from the premises as items might be contaminated. Your local emergency management agency will have information about health-related alerts.
— DO leave a forwarding address and phone number with your insurance broker and/or claim adjuster.
